West Virginia Speleological Survey (WVASS)
About
The West Virginia Speleological Survey is a scientific and conservation organization dedicated to mapping, cataloging, and studying the state’s extensive cave systems. Working closely with cavers and researchers, the survey collects data on cave locations, geology, biology, and hydrology to inform land management and conservation decisions. Its mission is to improve understanding and protection of underground resources that are often out of sight and overlooked.
By providing high-quality information on sensitive karst environments, WVaSS supports responsible decision-making by land managers, conservation groups, and recreation planners. This knowledge helps ensure that surface recreation and cave exploration are planned with an awareness of what lies beneath—an important consideration for Access Appalachia’s long-term vision of sustainable destination development.
