The West Virginia Land Trust protects land through conservation easements and land acquisition — the legal and financial tools that keep working farms, forests, and natural areas intact in the face of development pressure. Since its founding, WVLT has protected hundreds of thousands of acres across the state, working with willing landowners to ensure that the landscapes they've stewarded remain in the kinds of uses that have always defined them.
For outdoor recreation, the connection is direct: land trusts protect the private lands that surround and buffer public lands, maintain the viewsheds and water quality that make WV's public lands worth visiting, and sometimes secure trail corridors and public access that wouldn't otherwise exist.
