New River Alliance of Climbers
About
The New River Gorge has more than 4,000 roped climbs and bouldering routes — one of the highest concentrations of rock climbing in North America, on sandstone that climbers travel from across the world to get on. The New River Alliance of Climbers (NRAC) is the organization that maintains access to those routes. NRAC works with the National Park Service, landowners, and the climbing community to preserve and protect climbing access in the gorge, handle impact issues, and build the relationships that keep the crags open.
Climbing access is never guaranteed — it depends on the sustained work of organizations willing to engage land managers, respond to impact issues, and make the case for climbing as a legitimate and responsible use of public and private lands. NRAC has been doing that work in the New River Gorge for decades. For the thousands of climbers who visit the gorge each year, NRAC is the reason the routes are still there.
