Friends of Blackwater

About

The Blackwater Canyon in Tucker County is one of West Virginia's most iconic landscapes — a deep, dramatic gorge carved by the Blackwater River through spruce forests and sandstone cliffs. Friends of Blackwater has been working since the 1990s to protect the canyon and the surrounding Canaan Valley area from development, mining, and timbering that would fundamentally alter its character. Their campaigns have helped protect some of the most ecologically significant land in the state.

The Blackwater region draws mountain bikers, hikers, cross-country skiers, birders, and photographers who come specifically for the wildness and beauty of the landscape. FOB's conservation work is the reason that landscape has remained as intact as it has. Their ongoing advocacy for the Blackwater Canyon State Park and for responsible management of the surrounding Mon National Forest continues to shape the future of one of WV's great outdoor destinations.
