Elk River Trail Foundation

About

The Elk River Trail Foundation is dedicated to transforming a former rail corridor along the Elk River into a multi-use trail system that connects communities, parks, and scenic riverfronts. The foundation collaborates with state agencies, local governments, and volunteers to develop trail infrastructure, improve signage, and enhance user amenities. Its mission is to create a safe, attractive trail that supports recreation, active transportation, and economic development in adjacent towns.

By helping establish a signature rail-trail in central West Virginia, the Elk River Trail Foundation expands opportunities for cycling, walking, and river access in a previously underutilized corridor. This work directly supports Access Appalachia’s focus on trail-based tourism and regional connectivity, offering visitors a new way to experience small communities along a scenic waterway.
