Active Southern West Virginia works to get people moving — literally. Based in Beckley and serving the communities of southern West Virginia, Active SWV builds outdoor recreation programs, community trails, and health-through-activity initiatives in a part of the state that has historically faced significant barriers to outdoor access. Their work recognizes that the outdoor economy and public health are deeply connected: communities where people can walk, bike, and recreate are healthier, more engaged, and more economically vibrant.
Active SWV's programming spans community trail development, youth outdoor education, and organized recreation events that bring people outdoors who might not have considered it before. In southern WV — a region with enormous outdoor recreation assets but a complicated relationship with who those assets have historically served — their work to broaden access and participation is both important and overdue.
