The WV Scenic Trails Association maintains the Allegheny Trail — a 330-mile footpath running the length of West Virginia from the Pennsylvania border near Bruceton Mills south to the Virginia state line on Peters Mountain, where it connects to the Appalachian Trail. The Allegheny is one of the longest hiking trails in the Mid-Atlantic, traversing the Monongahela National Forest and some of the most remote terrain in the eastern United States. WVSTA is the volunteer-powered organization that keeps it passable.
Maintaining a 330-mile trail with a volunteer organization is not small work. WVSTA coordinates trail crews, manages shelter upkeep, produces maps and guides, and advocates for the trail's protection as development and land use pressures continue to evolve. For serious long-distance hikers, the Allegheny is a genuine backcountry experience — and the association behind it is what makes that possible.
